Navis Engineering says that recently completed sea trials by the 99,430 gross tons cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 have confirmed the high performance of its  dynamic positioning (DP) control system, Navis Nav DP4000.

Designed and constructed for TUI Cruises by STX Shipyard in Turku, Finland and delivered in May this year, the 294m long and 36m wide Mein Schiff 3 is to operate in the German premium class cruise market.

The vessel incorporates a number of eco-friendly features, with particular emphasis on energy efficiency, and Navis says that the Mein Schiff 3 consumes around 30% less energy compared with cruise ships of similar sizes.

The Mein Schiff 3 DP control system was designed in close cooperation with TUI Cruises. It features special functions which contribute to substantial fuel reduction, particularly during tendering operations.

DNV GL has reported that experts from Noble Denton Marine Assurance and Advisory in DNV GL have helped CNOOC perform the first offshore platform installation in China using advanced dynamic positioning (DP) floatover technology. The installation of CNOOC’s HZ25-8 DPP (Drilling Product Platform) topside was successfully completed in the eastern waters of the South China Sea for the Enping Oilfields. Caterpillar Marine will launch its Cat Propulsion Twin Fin system at the 2014 ITS Hamburg Conference and Exhibition, June 16–20. The Twin Fin system is a new diesel-electric solution that saves on fuel and emissions, while improving overall vessel performance. The system protects all of the propulsion mechanical parts within the hull profile while retaining reliability, cargo space, and maneuverability for outboard solutions. Vessel assurance was highlighted as a key challenge for the offshore industry at Riviera Maritime Media’s European Dynamic Positioning Conference. The event is being held in association with C-Mar’s Dynamic Positioning Centre in London with presentations from major oil companies BP and Nexen Petroleum, as well as multiple vessel operators.
