DP INSTRUCTOR ISSUES FAKE CERTIFICATES

A former Louisiana maritime instructor was indicted on federal charges for allegedly accepting cash payments to fraudulently certify individuals on critical maritime infrastructure equipment for which they they never actually completed training. The charges in the Eastern District of Louisiana follow an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service. USBL SPREAD FOR POLAR RESEARCH

Underwater acoustic positioning technology from Sonardyne Asia Pte. Ltd., Singapore, has been selected for China’s new polar research vessel currently under construction. Commissioned by the Polar Research Institute of China, the 122-metre vessel will be equipped with a Ranger 2 USBL (Ultra-Short BaseLine) system to allow the position of scientific equipment deployed from the ship to be precisely tracked. They have collaborated on redesigning aspects of ship systems to improve productivity and operational flexibility. It incorporates energy management applications for multiple vessel types, including: container ships, LNG carriers, offshore maintenance support vessels, shuttle tankers, windfarm support vessels and passenger ships. As the sophistication and complexity of dynamic positioning (DP) systems have evolved, it has led to the risk that DP operators may become preoccupied with managing the computer rather than managing the primary task of controlling the ship. In response to this potential risk, GE has revolutionised the operator interface of its SeaStream DP system to (according to the company) ensure that operators can rapidly familiarise themselves with the system, putting the control of the ship back in the hand of mariners.
